“It’s a little tender, yeah,” Stoney replied, taking a sip from her soda and grinning. “But the bitch who gave it to me is now short a couple of teeth, so don’t feel too bad.”

“Uh, I’d love to, but,” said Evelyn, her gaze falling to the floor, “I can’t. Not tonight.” She thought about Ken and how upset he’d be if he discovered she was hanging out with other people without his permission. Especially another guy.

“Oh,” said 2-Tone, looking legitimately disappointed. “Well… some other time, then?”

“Yeah,” replied Evelyn, hitching up her shoulder bag. “Some other time.” She smiled a little, then turned to leave.

“So how do you play this thing?” Evelyn asked, turning the shiny brass trumpet over in her hands, as 2-Tone watched. She held it up to her mouth and blew hard into the mouthpiece, but the only sound was a hollow woosh of air. The skunk laughed.

“Here, I’ll show you,” he said, leaning forward a little. “You’re opening your mouth too far. You gotta purse your lips really tight, like you just ate a sour lemon.” He demonstrated, and the snowglobe giggled, following suit.

“Wike dish?” she mumbled through her tiny lips.

“Yeah, just like that,” he said, nodding, then suddenly circled around, standing close behind Evelyn. His hands took hers as guided the trumpet back up to her mouth. “Now blow.”

She did, and the instrument let out a low, loud note. A grin flashed upon her freckled glass face.

“Hey, I did it!” she exclaimed, laughing. She glanced over her shoulder and up at 2-Tone, who was smiling back at her.
